Jim Hall:

It’s Chaparral and my own career. It’s a little more scientific. I was a mechanical engineer, a graduate engineer. And I started racing after well, actually during college.

But that’s when my career was, after I had the degree. And so I applied what I’d learned to what I was doing.

And as I said, I made a point of trying to understand the control and stability of cars. And so it was some trial and error for sure. But usually it was a plan.

We had a plan and a theory, and I went after it to see if I could prove it. And did a lot of measurement actually.

Had a test track right there where I could run. And it was very useful. That’s probably an advantage that we had during those days.

I could just go out and run during the mornings, say, and then come back in and make some changes, go back out in the evening and check it.

Where I think a lot of teams we were racing against in the ’60s didn’t have that capability.
